X Will Fund Claims Made By Unfairly Treated Users
Elon Musk has stated that X, previously called Twitter, will pay the legal bills of those who are treated unfairly by their employer for their activity on his social media platform. Musk made this commitment without any limitations on the funding amount.
Musk said, "If you were unfairly treated by your employer due to posting or liking something on this platform, we will fund your legal bill. No limit. Please let us know."
This move comes after X reached a new high in monthly users, surpassing 540 million in 2023.
Recently Musk told users that financial assistance from his platform would have "no limits" and he told users to "let us know" if they had had unfair treatment for posting or liking something.Musk has been very vocal about his commitment to freedom of speech in the past, once defining himself as a ‘free speech absolutist’.
Formerly known as Twitter, the social media platform was renamed last in July.
Musk has been public in his criticisms of the platform's policies on moderating content prior to his takeover.
When he announced that he was taking over Twitter in April 2022, he said "free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated". Shortly after acquiring Twitter, he tweeted: “Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated”. The post has already received over 18,000 replies to his post, with Musk responding to just one so far from right-wing account ‘Libs of TikTok’.
Despite these developments, X's cash flow remains negative due to a 50 percent drop in advertising revenue and a substantial debt burden. An expected upturn in advertising revenue in June did not materialise.
More recently, the firm that owns Twitter announced that it was suing an anti-hate organisation whose research criticised the platform. The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) had done research that showed hate and disinformation was "spreading like wildfire on the platform under Musk's ownership". X Corp accused CCDH of "unlawful acts" to "improperly gain access" to its data.
