Wind Turbine Maker Shuts Down Computer Systems
Vestas Wind Systems A/S, which is one of the world’s largest wind turbine makers was on 19 November 2021 been affected by 'a cyber security incident'.
To contain the issue, IT systems were shut down across multiple business units and locations whike the issue is investigated.nThe company is now working on recovering its systems but, “Customers, employees and other stakeholders may be affected by the shutdown of several of our IT-systems,” said the company statement.
“As part of our crisis management setup for cyber security, we are working together with our internal and external partners to contain the issue fully and recover our systems,” the company said in its statement. Wind turbine manufacturers and energy utilities have been struggling with high commodity prices, including for natural gas in Europe, as economies recover from the COVID pandemic.
The company earlier this month cut its profit forcast for the year as higher steel prices boosted production costs, Bloomberg reported. While the cyber security issue may affect production, so far it has not affected impacted turbines already being operated by Vestas customers, nor the company’s ability to service those machines
The incident comes as Vestas and other wind turbine manufacturers struggle with rising commodities prices and supply-chain disruptions. The company, which a bellwether for the wider wind turbine industry, has cut its profit outlook for the year as higher steel prices boost production costs.
While the cyber security issue may affect production, so far it hasn’t impacted turbines already being operated by Vestas customers, nor the company’s ability to service those machines.
