US State Department Under Attack
The US State Department has become the victim of a cyber attack and notifications of a possible serious breach have been made by the Department of Defense Cyber Command. The extent of the attack, who was behind the attack, investigation into the suspected entity, efforts taken to mitigate it, and ongoing cyber risk remains unclear.
The attack was only discovered recently, however the attack probably took place a few weeks ago, but the State Department's current work, evacuating Americans and allied refugees from Afghanistan, has "not been affected."
The State Department claims that not experienced any significant disruptions or had its operations impeded. "The Department takes seriously its responsibility to safeguard its information and continuously takes steps to ensure information is protected. “For security reasons, we are not in a position to discuss the nature or scope of any alleged cyber security incidents at this time", a State Department spokesperson said in a statement.
The US cyber attack story was first announced by Jacqui Heinrich, the White House correspondent for Fox News.
The State Department has been one of several US agencies attacked. In December 2020 the enormous SolarWinds breach was blamed on Russian hackers.
