Update: Sacked OpenAI Boss Is Reappointed

After a weekend of speculation, the story about Sam Altman's summary dismissal from OpenAI has taken an unexpected turn.

Instead of joining Microsoft, which is major shareholder in OpenAI, it has been announced today that he will return to OpenAI, and that the non-executive board members who fired him have themselves been fired. 

The new board of Directors will include ex-US Treasury Secretary, Larrey Summers and three other senior industry executives from Google, Quora and Salesforce. OpenAI has an unusual corporate structure in that it operates on a non-profit basis, although with a new Board and Altman back in charge, that may be about to change

The Story To Date:

Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s chief executive, announced on TwitterX on Monday that Altman would be joining Microsoft to lead "a new advanced AI research team".

Nadella also confirmed Emmett Shear's reported appointment as the new OpenAI CEO saying they are 'looking forward to getting to know Emmett Shear and OAI's new leadership team and working with them.'  has 

The ex-CEO  of video streaming platform Twitch, Emmett Shear is becoming the OpenAI's new boss, replacing Mira Murati, who was briefly elevates from CTO to temporary CEO in a hurried board decision which briefly made her the top female executive in the technology industry.

Shear announced this  TwitterX, that this job a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity", however he said that the way Altman had been fired was "handled very badly" and "seriously damaged our trust". The OpenAI board dismissed Sam Altman on Friday 17th November, saying it had lost confidence in him, and named Mira Murati, as its interim chief executive.

Altman was one of the founders of the company which created the first version of ChatGPT and helped the company significantly grow. He is one of the most well-known people in the AI sector and his dismissal came as a major surprise across the technology industry. This included former Google chief executive Eric Schmidt, who called Altman "a hero of mine" and said that he had "changed our collective world forever".

Microsoft, already a significant shareholder in OpenAI, says that it remained “committed to our partnership with OpenAI”.
