Ukraine Detects A Cyber Attack On A NATO Member

Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) agents have thwarted a cyber attack on a diplomatic office of a NATO member state. Hackers attempted to gain access by unauthorised use of an information resource of a state enterprise of the Ukrainian Health Ministry.

SBU’s press center said on June 5 that law enforcers documented violations of information security and use of automated systems by Health Ministry enterprise officials.

The violations allowed illegal access to the enterprise’s information and telecommunications systems, leading hackers to exploit the opportunity to launch an attack on a foreign diplomatic office.

The SBU said that based on the results of the inspection, the Health Ministry leadership had decided to dismiss the general director of the state enterprise.

He was declared a suspect in committing a crime under Article 363 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violation of the rules for the operation of computers). The pretrial investigation is continuing.

Neither the NATO member state nor the state enterprise of the Health Ministry was named in the report.
