Surging Attacks On Israeli Websites

As rocket attacks on Israel continue alongside the violence in Gaza, a new dimension has emerged in the conflict as multiple Israeli websites and mobile apps have become the targets of various pro-Palestinian hacktivist groups.

Multiple media websites, Israeli government entities, Palestinian Internet service providers, and various other organisations have all fallen prey to a surging offensive cyber campaign

After suspected Iranian hackers claimed a string of recent attacks on Israeli security cameras, Israel’s cyber defence chief has said he is “very concerned” that Iran could escalate its long-running covert battle with Israel in cyberspace with more serious attacks on infrastructure as the war between Israel and Hamas shows no sign of ending.

Senior cyber security leaders recently took part in a UK-Israel Cyber Forum at the House of Lords at Westminster Parliament on to discuss the rising threat of specific cyber attacks since the Israel-Hamas war broke out. Over 120 chief information security attending learned more details of the  significant increase in distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks since October 7.

According to Israeli cyber security Radware Israel has had more DDoS attacks than any other country worldwide since October 7.

Several hacktivist groups, some of which have connections to Russia, have been targeting Israeli government and media websites while aligning themselves with the Palestinian military group, Hamas. These hacktivist groups have use DDoS attacks to inundate websites with traffic, effectively rendering them inaccessible. One Iran- affiliated hacker group known as Cyber Av3ngers claimed responsibility for an alleged attack on an Israeli electric contractor on October 6, purportedly resulting in a power outage in the city of Yavne.

The same group is suspected of responsibility for a 2020 attack on Israel's water & sewage system amongst several others.

Although none of these attacks have so far had a damaging damaging level impact compared to some recent ransomware attacks they certainly add to the psychological impact of the violent  conflict which affects Israelis  in gaining to access basic online services.
