Social Media: An Exclusive 3 Part Review
Social media is by far the most popular service available on the Internet. Most people in Kenya, South Africa, Chile, Bulgaria, Greece, and Argentina are using social media as a source of news. In France, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, and Japan the numbers are significantly growing.
Large portions of social media users around the world admit that they do not trust social platforms, either as media sources, or as a way to get news, and yet they continue to access such networks on a daily basis. However, many also say that they don’t always trust the established publications, and TV in their own country either.
With more than 3.5 billion users, social media is growing tremendously and it is now a preferred medium for businesses to reach out to its target audience.
According to a survey from the Pew Research Center, adults aged 18 to 29 in the US are more likely to get news via social media than from print newspapers or news sites, and they also report being online almost constantly.
In times past, meeting someone usually required physical contact which kept the number of relationships an individual had in the low dozens. You usually only met people who were close by you. Friends, lovers and relatives tended to be nearby.
In this age of digitisation, people have found many more ways to be socially active, particularly with the internet and the advent of numerous social networking platforms and apps.
Now all sorts of relationships are made on social media. People no longer need a personal handshake or face-to-face meeting.
The first social media site to reach a million monthly active users was MySpace, it achieved this milestone in around 2004. This is arguably the beginning of social media as we know it. Since then, social media sites have grown in numbers by leaps and bounds and social media usage is now one of the most popular activities. In 2020, an estimated 3.6 billion people are using social media worldwide and this number is projected to increase to around 4.4 billion by 2025.
