Nvidia Hit With Malware
The US microchip company Nvidia is one of the largest producers of graphics chips and has been compromised by a cyber attack that knock business operations offline for two days.
The network intrusion has affected Nvidia's internal systems, including email and developer tools, which have suffered outages for several days.
It is unknown whether any data has been stolen from Nvidia, either internal data or customer data, or if the attack has been solely to disrupt systems.
Companies around the world are on the lookout for online attacks following Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine, however the cyber ransomware attack suffered by Nvidia does not appear to be connected to the crisis in Ukraine. "We are investigating an incident. We don't have any additional information to share at this time.... Our business and commercial activities continue uninterrupted. We are still working to evaluate the nature and scope of the event and don't have any additional information to share at this time." " an Nvidia spokesperson said.
Cyber security expert Prof. Alan Woodward of Surrey University commented that Nvidia has most likely shut down its systems to avoid further damage. "The ultimate concern is that somebody may have put something in one of the software updates... They'll be going through trying to make sure to see if there's any indication that anything has been changed in their software that they then shipped to their clients." he said.
NVidia is valued at more than $600 billion, has its main offices in Santa Clara, California, in the same area as other major US semiconductor companies.
