North vs. South: Cyber Warfare In Korea Is Escalating
Yonhap News Agency quoted a Seoul official recently as saying that it was confirmed that North Korean government entities spearheading propaganda efforts are operating task forces to post comments on Internet portals to instigate unrest amongst the South Korean public.
The official said organisations, including the United Front Department and the Reconnaissance General Bureau, are helping North Korean spies in the South disseminate false rumors in addition to their main cyber warfare schemes such as carrying out DDoS, or distributed denial of service, attacks.
The official said the North was also found to be not only using its own propaganda media outlets but also South Korean Web sites in performing their cyber warfare missions.
The official said when a group of North Korean restaurant employees in China defected to the South earlier this year, the North’s United Front Department directed its spies to spread the claim that it was an abduction plot by the South.
The official added the spies obeyed the order and posted such claims on South Korean Web sites.
