Nation-State Hackers Are Infiltrating The 2020 Election
As the 2020 presidential election draws closer hackers with ties to Russia, China and Iran are attempting to snoop on people and groups involved with the US 2020 presidential election.
Microsoft has identified cyber attacks aimed at people and organisations engaged in the next US presidential election and has recently gone public with evidence that nation-state cyber attacks targeting individuals and organisations involved in the upcoming US election.
The activity makes clear that foreign activity groups have stepped up their efforts targeting the 2020 election, and it is similar to what the US government has predicted.
The Russian hackers who breached the 2016 Democratic campaign are again involved, said the US tech firm.
Microsoft said it was "clear that foreign activity groups have stepped up their efforts" targeting the election. Both President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden's campaigns are in the cyber-raiders' sights.
The Strontium group is also known as Fancy Bear, a cyber-attack unit allegedly affiliated with Russia's GRU military intelligence service is thought to be the hacking team.
An Iranian group known as Phosphorus had unsuccessfully sought to access accounts of White House officials and Mr Trump's campaign staff between May and June of this year, Microsoft added.
Destabilising the US is considered in line with Russia’s strategic geopolitical goals, so it was always considered a virtual certainty that similar attacks to the earlier cyber-attacks would take place in 2020.
