Japan Approves Home Grown 5G
When most people think of Japan, particularly Tokyo, cutting-edge technology will be one of the first things which come to mind and the government intends to keep the country at the forefront of technological innovations.
Japan’s cabinet have approved a bill designed to accelerate the development of 5G networks in the country. Companies working on ground breaking technologies will be able to access low-interest loans from government-approved financial institutions to support their ambitions.
Importantly, one condition to accessing the loans is that a company’s plans must meet a minimum cybersecurity standard.
Many lawmakers in Japan share concerns from around the world about the alleged influence of China in their infrastructure through companies like Huawei. The US government has been particularly vocal about its belief that Chinese firms are obligated to conduct espionage on behalf of the Chinese government. Several countries have banned equipment from Chinese firms like Huawei, while others, like the UK, are limiting the role they can play in critical infrastructure.
In contrast, Japan will help to support the development of alternatives to Chinese equipment which currently dominates the global market-share of areas like telecoms infrastructure.
In December, the government unveiled tax measures aimed at encouraging companies to spend their cash piles on startups and other investments while also helping firms to compete with China’s advance in 5G technology.
This is the next step in Japan competing with China’s advance in 5G technology and comes at a time when the US and some allies including Australia has banned Chinese technology giant, Huawei.
