Israel Wants Collaborators For Defence

The Wannacry ransomware attack in May 2017 may have been “least damaging” for Israel’s critical infrastructures. It certainly prompted the Middle eastern country to beef up Internet security, said government officials.

Israel is looking to collaborate with several countries including India to develop state-level cyber shields through its nodal agency Israel National Cyber Directorate (INCD).

The country, which attracts 20% of the total global private investment in cyber security, looks to strengthen its ties with global nations to make its cyber world safer, according to Yigal Unna, director general, INCD.

Unna said securing cyber space of the country is one of the main objectives of the directorate, which is now a consolidated body after merger of National Cyber Bureau and the National Cyber Authority.

The country believes partnership with other nations and sharing information would result in stronger defence against cyber-attacks.

“If Israel does it only by itself it will be good but not as good as being global. If there is a cyber-attack, it could come through other countries. It is better to collaborate with India, Spain, Italy and other nations. If we work together and find the weak signals and share information we will be able to defend and stop the attacks,” said Unna.

Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, invited further global investments in cyber security.

“We have unbelievable opportunities and we’re realising them and at the same time we have unbelievable challenges and we must confront them. There will be no silver bullet. This is a supreme test for our civilisation. We have to combine forces. I welcome you to come to Israel. We want your business,” Netanyahu said at Cyber Week, a global cyber security conference, organised recently.

Israel’s cyber security body said even though 80% of the intelligence information on cyber threats could be found on the open-source platforms, partnerships with other countries would thwart global crises.

Unna said threat are becoming “bigger in quality and volume”.

The country, however, did not disclose its projected investment for a multi-year plan to develop the cyber shields and other projects of the directorate. Israel government’s funding includes activities, starting from education on cyber security to, cyber defence.
