Iran Deploys AI - Guided Missiles & Drones
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) haws recently tested Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered missiles in a Persian Gulf military exercises, which marks an important advance in Iran’s missile capabilities.
The military exercise took place in south-western Iran in January and included the the launch of airborne precision-guided missiles being launched from drones.
According Iranian sources, the AI-powered missiles accurately struck simulated enemy targets, indication how AI is being integrated with Iran’s overall military strategy.
The military drills were held in Bushehr and Khuzestan provinces close to national critical infrastructure, including Iran’s nuclear power plant in Bushehr, as well as vital oil and petrochemical facilities. The exercise was designed to simulate the protection of these strategic facilities. Admiral Alireza Tangsiri, the Commander of the IRGC Navy, underscored the importance of these drills in safeguarding Iran’s essential infrastructure. He said that Iran is producing cruise missiles with ranges exceeding 1,000km, all powered by AI technology.
Admiral Tangsisri claimed that all of Iran’s new missiles are AI-powered, equipped with precision-strike capabilities that enable highly accurate targeting. "All of Iran’s latest missiles are AI-driven," Tangsiri noted, underscoring the country's commitment to strengthening its defence technologies.
This development signals a significant leap in Iran’s military capabilities, using AI to improve missile accuracy, targeting precision, and overall performance.
Specific details about the particular AI technology used in these missiles have yet to be revealed, however, as AI becomes a component of Iran’s defence strategy, the country’s missile and drone programs are catching attention amidst smouldering tensions between Iran and Israel.
The use of AI in missile technology has the potential to shift military power balances in the M. East as Iran advances its missile development, although the strategic implications for the region are, as yet, unclear.
