In Demand: Cybersecurity Specialists

Cybersecurity is one of the highest paying careers in the world, yet many job positions are still unfilled, why is that?  According to Forbes magazine, there are over 40,000 jobs in cybersecurity that are open and companies are desperate to hire qualified professionals.

ISACA, a nonprofit, global membership association for IT and information systems professionals, predicts that by the year 2019 there could be a global shortage of 2 million cybersecurity professionals.

On average, a cybersecurity analyst can earn $75,000 a year, a cybersecurity engineer can earn an average of $100,000 per year, and there are many more positions that have a high earning potential for those with a cybersecurity degree.
In San Diego, there are thousands of jobs looking for cybersecurity professionals who have a security clearance or military background, which is why veterans have an even greater opportunity for a high-level job in this field.

So what does a Cybersecurity professional do and what does it mean to be a Cybersecurity specialist?

Cybersecurity refers to the preventative measures and programs that are used to protect private information from hackers, attacks, damage to a network, and otherwise unauthorised access. Every application that exists on your phone, your personal and work email, and even the ATM where you access your money has some variance of cybersecurity software on it. Some of the biggest threats to online security are cyber terrorism, cyber warfare, and cyber espionage, and these are topics that we see in news headlines daily.

The recent Equifax cyber-attack is powerful example of the importance of cybersecurity and protecting private servers from being compromised.

Maintaining secure systems takes a lot of work, and there are thousands of hackers online who try to break them daily, which is why there are so many opportunities for cybersecurity professionals to find their dream job and make money at the same time.

Cybersecurity professionals are people who like a challenge, are highly motivated, enjoy complex problem solving, have a deep understanding of risks, and have a strong ethical compass. So how would you get started on a cybersecurity career path?

One route is via the Cybersecurity Bachelor’s degree at Coleman University inSan Diego.
