Humanoid Robotics: The Next Step For Artificial Intelligence
The world of robotics has been evolving at an unprecedented pace, with humanoid robots at the forefront of this technological revolution. In simple terms, Embodied AI refers to artificial intelligence systems that are housed within a physical form - essentially, robots.
Unlike traditional AI, which exists in computers or the cloud, Embodied AI interacts closer with the tangible world, learning and evolving through this interaction.
Humanoid robotics can mimic human attributes, behaviours and even emotions. These robots are built to interact seamlessly with humans, making the integration of robots into daily life seemingly natural and efficient
According to predictions, humanoid robots with Embodied AI will be able to perform useful tasks at scale by the end of 2024. Their useful applications will be in manufacturing, warehousing, store operations/restocking and hospital & healthcare operations. By the end of 2025, its possible that humanoid robots will proliferate into homes.
Embodied AI was first used to describe the special branch of AI that focuses on how systems interact with the physical world, including AI for sensorimotor skills, autonomous navigation, real-world interactions and learning.
Recently it is taking on a broader meaning. With the rise of Generative AI and the multiple research paths building towards multi-function AI, the term Embodied AI is being used to capture the concept of a robot that gives physical form to AI. A robot is the body for AI.
Just over a decade ago the most advanced humanoid robotics projects were either activities funded by NASA - the best known these was their Robonaut project dating from 2011 - or demonstration projects like the Asimo by Honda. However, neither was capable of doing anything really useful.
Now, Several major technology trends have coincided to enabled genuine advances in robotics.
- Batteries are more powerful and last longer.
- New types of actuators require less power and weigh less.
- Computers are more powerful.
- Sensors are better.
- New types of AI, especially deep learning, are available.
In the last six months humanoid robots have been fielded as prototypes into environments where they are co-working with humans. Indeed, humanoid robots have been demonstrated in laboratory conditions with abilities to handle complex tasks like cooking, cleaning folding clothes, soldering, and making coffee.
The capability of humanoid robots with embodied AI is now accelerating to the point where robots can learn by watching what humans do.
In addition to the use of humanoid robots with embodied AI in manufacturing and warehousing, other uses will soon follow as businesses take advantage of their application where humans are unable, or unwilling, to be employed.
