HSBC Mobile Banking App Fails
Thousands of UK HSBC customers have reported that they are unable to access mobile banking. The real-time online servce tracker Downdetector, has received over four hundred reports from user that their app for banking is not working.
The problem comes on Black Friday, a day when many people will be making purchases due to the discounts offered by retailers.
The issues began at around 8 am on 24th November and are still ongoing with thousands of reports still flooding in from users. “We understand some customers are having trouble accessing banking services as usual right now,” HSBC said in a statement. “We’re investigating this as a matter of urgency and will share an update as soon as possible.”
The bands service status page suggests that the issue is affecting both mobile and online users:-
- Mobile banking - We are currently experiencing log on issues - No planned maintenance.
- Online banking - We are currently experiencing log on issues - No planned maintenance.
Faki Saadi, Director of Sales, UK & Ireland at enterprise mobility firm SOTI commented: “Black Friday weekend is one of the biggest shopping events of the year... Most businesses plan months in advance for this surge in online orders, often ensuring they have enough staff to cope with demand. In the case of HSBC’s mobile banking app, downtime at any point of the year would be frustrating for customers but especially so on a day like today.
It’s not just that they can’t access their online banking either, they are unable to verify purchases with multi-factor authentication, something which is essential for device security...
It serves as a lesson to other banks, retailers and businesses, that having an effective application management solution in place is critical to help reduce the risk of downtime and improve business continuity.”
Customers of First Direct, a division of HSBC UK, are also thought to be affected. HSBC has over 14m customers in the UK alone, although not all of these use mobile banking. Angry users have now rushed to social media express their discontent.
