He's Back Again...
Former President Donald Trump has finally broken his silence and returned to social media on X, the social-media platform formerly known as Twitter. He posted a picture of his mugshot from his booking at Fulton County Jail in Georgia, and he sent a message to his 85 million plus followers.
This comes after he surrendered on charges of plotting to overturn Georgia's 2020 election results and nine months after Elon Musk reinstated Trump’s account. Twitter permanently suspended Trump’s account in January 2021, citing the risk of further incitement of violence following the storming of the US Capitol.
His account was "'permanently" suspended after the riotous events at the US Capitol in January 2021 but was reactivated after Elon Musk bought Twitter in November 2022 after polling its users on whether the former president should be allowed to return. Trump, however, hadn't posted until now, instead putting updates on Truth Social, his own platform.
Mr Trump's first post was of his mugshot, with the words "Never Surrender" and a campaign website link.
Mr Musk later reposted it with the comment "Next-Level".
After the 6 January 2021 riot in Washington DC, Twitter said in a statement: "We have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence". Since then Mr Trump has been posting on Truth Social, his own Twitter-like social media platform. However, it is not widely used.
At his arraignment in Atlanta, Trump spent approximately 20 minutes at the jailhouse being indicted on 13 criminal charges, including racketeering, conspiracy, false statements and asking a public official to violate their oath of office in an effort to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. The former president was released on $200,000 and agreed to an order limiting his posts on social media in reference to witnesses or co-defendants in the case before his X account later shared a picture of his mugshot serving as his first post on the website formerly known as Twitter since January 6, 2021.
Before his Twitter suspension, Twitter was the main platform used by Mr Trump to communicate with his followers. After he was elected, he credited it as a key reason for his successful run for the presidency. In 2017, he said: "Twitter is a wonderful thing for me, because I get the word out… I might not be here talking to you right now as president if I didn't have an honest way of getting the word out."
In less than three hours, Mr Trump's original post received more than 36 million views and 530,000 likes.
