Google’s New Cyber Security Certificate Program
Google has a new six month entry-level certification training program aimed at a new generation of cyber security professionals under its existing Google Career Certificates initiative.
The new entry-level cyber security certificate aims to teach learners how to identify common risks, threats, and vulnerabilities, as well as the techniques to mitigate them. Google says there are roughly 750,000 open cyber security jobs in the US alone, while meanwhile the rate of cyber attacks increased 38% globally.
“Our training program will help expand the cyber security workforce and fill a major skills gap to keep America safe from an evolving threat landscape, while simultaneously providing an opportunity for people from all economic and educational backgrounds.” according to Google.
Interested individuals can sign up for a 7-day free trial, after which they will have to pay $49 per month to continue learning.
This program aims to offer affordable, accessible data/information security training on identifying and mitigating threats, as well as hands-on experience with tools including Python, Linux, and Security Information and Event Management Systems (SIEM), the company said in a post today.
Google said the program also offers an opportunity to reach a more diverse pool of people for cyber security jobs, including women and workers of color currently underrepresented in the field.
"Part of our broader Google commitment to developing the cybersecurity workforce, the Certificate is designed and taught by Google's cyber security experts," Google's announcement said. "It will prepare learners for entry-level jobs in cybersecurity in less than six months with no prior experience required, create greater opportunities for people around the world and help fill the growing number of open cyber roles."
Google's Career Certificate Consortium, launched in 2018, is headed up by more than 150 employers and partners with more than 400 educational institutions and is focused on solving critical skills gap issues across multiple sectors. It also noted that it’s collaborating with over 150 US companies that are committed to considering graduates for entry-level jobs. Cybersecurity Certificate graduates will gain access to an exclusive job platform where they can apply for job openings from these employers.
Google says that it has graduated more than 150,000 people from its program to date, 55% of whom identify as being from a minority ethnic background.
