Google Launches Its New AI Model - Gemini
Google hasl aunched Gemini, its new generative AI model which is meant to power a range of products and services including the Googe AI chatbot too Bard, a competitor with Microsoft's affiliate, ChatGPT.
Google is promoting Gemini’s structure and capabilities, saying that the model exceeds the performance of other leading AI platforms. However, controversy surrounds the demo video "Hands-on with Gemini: Interacting with multimodal AI," and Google has admitted to staging portions of it.
Now, Google’s promtional video showcasing the capabilities of its new AI model, Gemini, has been revealed to not have been carried out in real-time or in voice. This information came to light when a Google spokesperson clarified the process behind the video. The video's output speed was enhanced, and contrary to its title, there was no real-time voice interaction between the AI and the user. Google defended its approach, emphasising that all prompts and outputs in the video were real, aiming to inspire developers.
It calls Gemini the most capable and general-purpose AI it’s developed so far, said it plans to expand the advanced version of this large language model (LLM) next year. The LLM is multimodal, meaning it can understand different types of information, including text, audio, images, and video.
A “lite” version of Gemini, Gemini Pro,has begun rolling out to Googel's AI chatbot, Bard. Users have been quick to express frustration with its performance as the model reportedly failed to get the basic facts right. For example, Gemini Pro incorrectly named Brendan Gleeson as the 2023 Oscar Best Actor winner, not the actual winner, Brendan Fraser.
A Google spokesperson clarified the process behind the video in a Bloomberg report. The description of the video also carries a disclaimer saying ‘For the purposes of this demo, latency has been reduced and Gemini outputs have been shortened for brevity.’
Google admitted when asked for comment that the video demo didn’t happen in real time with spoken prompts but instead used still image frames from raw footage and then wrote out text prompts to which Gemini to responded.
