Former President Donald Trump Donald Trump has joined TikTok, the popular video platform, despite attempting to ban it on national security grounds during his presidency 4 years ago. In 2020, Trump sought to clamp down on TikTok through executive action due to fears that the Chinese government could access sensitive American user data on the app, which is owned by the Chinese technology giant ByteDance.

US Federal courts blocked that initaiative, although US legislators have introduced new rules to force a change in ownership  

More recently, Trump has distanced himself from the moves to ban the app, even though he apparently still considers it a national security threat. While has since criticised recent attempts to regulate it. Trump has already attracted over 3.6 million followers since launching his accountsaying that he will use "every tool available to speak directly with the American people". The TikTok platform has anestimated 170 million users in the US. 

President Joe Biden is also using TikTok's platform to campaign for re-election in November, but he has only collected up 340,000 followers, ten times fewer than that of his rival. 

This is after President Biden signed into law a bill which gives the social media platform's Chinese owner, ByteDance, nine months to divest the app or it will be blocked in the US. The law was introduced because of concerns TikTok might share user data with the Chinese government, claims it has always denied.
