CYRIN's New Lab - The Fundamentals of Cryptography
In this new Level One lab from CYRIN, students are introduced to cryptography, the process of hiding or encoding messages or information so only intended recipients can read them.
Students will learn a little bit about historical cryptographic techniques while they progress to modern digital cryptography. They will get hands on experience with symmetric and asymmetric key cryptographic systems. The lab also covers steganography, where messages are hidden in seemingly innocuous images, video, audio or text files. The use of cryptographic techniques in blockchains, for securing passwords, and for ensuring the integrity of data is also explored.
Why this is Important
Cryptography creates the underpinning of data security and privacy in the modern world and is a cornerstone of cybersecurity, protecting networks, systems and data from cyber threats. Online transactions, such as banking and e-commerce rely heavily on cryptography. It's also a core technology for blockchain, enabling secure and transparent transactions.
Students should have a basic understanding of Linux and the Linux command line and the Getting Started with CYRIN lab is recommended. Like all our new labs, this is mapped to the NIST NICE Framework, the MITRE ATT&CK Matrix and appropriate NSA CAE-CD and CAE-CO Knowledge Units.
These development efforts keep CYRIN at the forefront of new and innovative ways to train and teach cybersecurity. Inexpensive, easy-to-use and tailored to your schedule, the CYRIN labs are your entry to the world of cybersecurity. To learn more about our content visit the CYRIN catalog page.
