Cyber Attack On Lisbon Port
The Portuguese Port of Lisbon was hacked on Christmas Day 2022, and the Port’s management are worried about the potential exposure of confidential data and customer information. The port’s official website, has been taken down and has remained inoperable since.
LockBit, who have claimed responsibility for the attack, say its ransomware has taken down the port’s website and internal computer systems.
The hackers claim to have stolen the port's audits, financial reports, contracts, budgets, ship logs, and other cargo and crew information and personal data about customers. The hackers have threatened to publish all of the files that were seized during their computer attack should their ransom demands of $1.5 million not be paid by 18 January.
The Port of Lisbon is part of the critical infrastructure in Portugal's capital city and the port is one of the most used ports in Europe, as it has a commercial location and it serves container ships, cruise ships, and holiday crafts.
“The Board of Directors of the Port of Lisbon (APL) informs that, on the 25th of December, APL was the target of a computer attack and all security protocols and response measures foreseen for this type of occurrence were quickly activated, being guaranteed operational activity. “The case is being monitored by the National
Cybersecurity Center and the Judiciary Police, with APL working permanently and in close coordination with all the competent authorities, in order to guarantee the security of the systems and respective data,” the Port Authority said in a statement.
Despite these threats, local sources say that no operational activity has been compromised at the Port of Lisbon, which has more than 3,500 vessel calls annually, handling over 13.4 million tons of cargo.
Security analysts have reported that LockBit is among the most prolific and widespread ransomware gangs of 2022. It is now thought that over 1200 organisations worldwide have been hit by LockBit, accounting for a third of all cyber attack claims in 2022.
