Canada Challenges Meta Over Access To News
Meta has recently announced it will shut down access to news on Facebook and Instagram in Canada. This comes after the country’s federal government passed the Online News Act a law that require tech companies pay content fees to domestic media outlets.
Meta aims to alter the media and it aims to stop news access on Facebook and Instagram in Canada after the country’s parliament passed this new law that requires tech giants to pay publishers to use their content.
News availability will be ended on Facebook and Instagram for all users in Canada prior to the Online News Act (Bill C-18) taking effect. If similar events in Australia are a model. then this is likely to be a brief blackout.
Meta said similar staements in 2021 as Australia created similar legal regulations. Zuckerberg’s company quickly restored access to the news Down Under after securing concessions from lawmakers. Meta has said that it is unfair to expect the company to pay publishers when it drives traffic to their websites. Yet since the law took effect, Meta and Alphabet's Google have paid some A$200 million ($134 million) annually to Australian news outlets, according to a report from the former chair of Australia’s competition regulator.
US lawmakers want similar laws in Meta’s home state of California. Meta says it makes 40% of its revenue in the US, which was $117 billion last year and lists Australia and Canada among its most significant regions. “While these product tests are temporary, we intend to end the availability of news content in Canada permanently following the passage of Bill C-18,” Meta wrote in a statement.
