British Spy Agency Opens A New Cyber Centre
The British Government has invested £5.8m in a cyber and digital centre,which has been opened in Cheltenham, with the aim that the picturesque town will become the cyber capital of the UK.
The FuturePark centre, which is at the University of Gloucestershire located in Cheltenham, has been launched by Anne Keast-Butler, Director of the Government Communication Headquarters (GCHQ), which has its top-secret 'Donut' headquarters in the town.
The new centre has created a future-facing space for cyber, data, games and computing courses based at University of Gloucestershire’s Park Campus.
Gloucestershire has a longstanding relationship with GCHQ, the country’s national cyber security and communications centre, which has been based in the county for more than 60 years. The of aim Future Park is to develop a truly skilled workforce, not only in the cyber security sector, but also in other related areas like software development, retail innovation, virtual reality, gaming and more.
Future Park has been developed in consultation with CyNam, Hub8, and Plexal, FuturePark it offers state-of-the-art equipment and technology for more than 500 students on cyber, digital and computing courses at the University, the facilities offered are also available for local businesses and community organisations to use.
The university said FuturePark, which was funded by the Office for Students, was “a testament to the power of collaboration”. University of Gloucestershire vice chancellor Dame Clare Marchant said she was proud of the university for raising their standards higher. “With Cheltenham already home to leading national and international organisations, we’re proud to be raising the bar even higher with our own facilities... This new space marks our commitment to supporting Cheltenham’s vision of becoming the cyber capital of the UK and a centre of excellence for computing and digital technologies.
“By investing in our facilities and in the analysts, coders and designers of the future, we can ensure local employers have the skills they need to realise the region’s growth ambitions. At the same time, we can ensure our students and graduates are able to achieve their potential here in Gloucestershire.” she said.
