British Royal Family's Website Targeted
The British Royal's Website has been attacked and was subject to an attempted Denial of Service (DoS) attack. Apparently, no access was gained to systems or content. Royal.uk, which is the official hub for information about King Charles, Queen Camilla and their family. The website was offline for around 90 minutes on Sunday morning on 1st of October.
A DoS attack means the site was bombarded by traffic, which caused it to stop working. The attack began at 10am and the URL, royal.uk, the page displayed an error message, “Gateway time-out Error code 504.”
The Russian hackers KillNet, a pro-Kremlin group, has claimed responsibility for the attack, posting about it on their Telegram channel, although it has not been confirmed if they were behind the attack. KillNet is best known for its Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) campaigns against countries supporting Ukraine, especially NATO countries, since the start of the war in February last year.
The Royal website is now up and running as usual. It appears to be conducting an additional security check for visitors to the site, as indicated by a message that appears before entry is granted.
KillNet has in the past claimed attacks on US government websites and has taken action against other countries opposed to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In November 2022, the European Parliament website was also hit by a cyber attack claimed by KillNet shortly after lawmakers approved a resolution calling Moscow a "state sponsor of terrorism".
