British NHS Hospitals Under Attack
Three English NHS hospitals in Liverpool, the Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust, the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital and Royal Liverpool University Hospital, have been hacked. These attacks were detected on 28th November and became public knowledge on 4th December.
Now, a Russian ransomware group, INC Ransom, has begun leaking on its Dark Web forum some of the data stolen from the IT systems shared by the three hospitals in the form of screenshots.
The Alder Hey Hospital said that its investigation as to what data has been stolen was ongoing, although it had now secured the systems to ensure the attackers did not continue to have access.
These attacks on Liverpool NHS hospitals are just the latest attacks on the English NHS healthcare organisations in 2024.
Recently the Wirral University Teaching Hospital Trust declared a major incident on 25 November, with patients facing long A&E waits and cancelled appointments, but the current attacks is not thought to be linked to the Wirral attack. The hospital has asked anyone with an outpatients appointment to come to their appointment as planned.
Local people were \sked to only attend the emergency department in genuine emergencies. Those with non-urgent complaints were asked to use NHS 111, walk-in centres, urgent treatment centres, GPs or pharmacies.
In June 2024 an attack purportedly by ransomware-as-a-service group Qilin on Synnovis, a pathology laboratory services provider, not only affected patient care at several London hospitals for many weeks but also triggered a national blood supply shortage, forcing cancellation of thousands of medical procedures.
Merseyside Police have said they were working with the National Crime Agency and National Cyber Security Centre to provide support and assistance.
