British Government Warned To Prioritise Cyber Security
The British government needs to 'wake up' and and do more to protect the country from cyber attacks and urgently prioritise new laws to protect vulnerable infrastructure and prevent catastrophic system failures. A report by the Chartered Institute for IT (BCS) has listed a series of recommendations.
The BCS’s recommendations include requiring company boards to include a member who will be held accountable for the firm’s cyber security.
Events of the last few weeks have hightened concerns about cyber attacks and supply chain incidnets on the UK The widespread disinfornation and fake news about the Southport child murders, the subsequent public disorder, and major outages affecting aeroplanes, trains, hospitals and broadcasters are all clear signs of the cyber security threat.
The new government has listed the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill in the King's speech announcing its legislative programme, but there are concerns that this bill is still not being given high enough priority
The BCS has called on the government to set up a unit to support small and medium-sized businesses and wants to see a new cyber security code of practice with mandatory requirements to report breaches. It also wants companies to be forced to invest more in cyber security workforces, ensure resilience is part of their business plans and have more monitoring to spot problems.
Not only are these attacks becoming a more persistent threat to businesses, but there’s also an increased awareness of them amongst the general public. Almost every day we read stories in newspapers and on websites about companies that have suffered serious consequences for not taking cyber security seriously enough.
While the threat of cyber attacks cannot be entirely eliminated, there are numerous effective measures that can be taken to protect and against hackers and other malicious actors.
