British Airways Fake Facebook Page
A fraudulent Facebook page, which falsely claims to be associated with British Airways, is duping Facebook users into giving their personal information to dodgy marketing companies.
The Facebook Page, which calls itself “British Airways Holidays”, claims that you can win holidays and free air travel by clicking a “Sign Up” button. The bogus Page features the British Airways logo along with photos and videos stolen from legitimate sources.
Despite its name and appearance, the Facebook Page has no connection to British Airways. Users who decide to participate in the supposed giveaways have no chance whatsoever of winning the promised prizes. The prizes do not exist.
If you click the Sign Up button, you will be taken to a fraudulent prize web page which again uses stolen British Airways logos and images to make it appear legitimate. The web page claims that you must click a button and fill out some questions to validate your entry.Clicking the “Validate Entry” button opens one of several websites that promise the chance to win further prizes such as iPhones in exchange for supplying your mobile phone number, your name and address, and your email address.
However, small print legal clauses on the sites state that your information will be shared with third-party marketers who will subsequently inundate you with unwanted phone calls, text messages, emails, and letters peddling a range of dodgy products and services.
In some cases, by supplying your mobile phone number, you may have inadvertently subscribed to an absurdly expensive SMS “service” that will charge you several dollars for every inane and pointless text message they send you.
And, alas, the supposed entry validation will never complete no matter how many sites you give your information to. So, you will never receive your holiday prize entry. Which, of course, does not really matter given that the promised prize never existed to begin with.
Facebook scammers regularly use the promise of free airline tickets and holidays to trick users into participating in their bogus promotions. Be wary of any Facebook Page or post that promises free air travel, cruises, or holidays. Such scams are very common.
For the record, the genuine British Airways Facebook Page, which features Facebook’s blue “verified” icon beside its name, makes no mention of the supposed giveaways.
