Britain's Cyber Security Industry Is Growing
The British government expects the national cyber security sector is to support sustainable economic growth through technology leadership.
In pursuit of this goal, it produces an annual report and this year’s analysis demonstrates exceptional performance, with the sector’s contribution to our economy reaching new heights, generating £13.2 billion in revenue and £7.8 billion in Gross Value Added, according to government criteria.
This growth translates directly into high-value employment opportunities across the UK and the sector now employs an estimated 67,300 people, creating 6,600 new jobs in 2024. In particular, the government’s recently published AI Opportunities Action Plan sets out a bold vision for UK leadership in Artificial Intelligence. Cyber security is fundamental to realising this ambition, ensuring AI systems are secure and trustworthy by design. The forthcoming Cyber Security and Resilience Bill will provide a robust framework for protecting our critical national infrastructure, driving up security standards.
The UK cyber security sector is a strong growth market. The geographical spread of cyber security firms, with half located outside London and the South East, and for the first time, the highest proportion of external investment was in the North West region, home to a growing number of cyber businesses and soon to be location of the National Cyber Force in Lancashire, which will focus on countering threats from terrorists, criminals and states seeking to do harm to the UK and its allies.
Despite this optimistic outlook, there is no doubt about the vulnerability of the UK economy to digital disruption and malicious cyber activity.
The recent total loss of electrical power at London Heathrow airport, compliance failures in the Nuclear power sector, high profile ransom attacks on London Hospitals and the transport network , demonstrate the extent of the national challenge.
