Airbus To Pay €1.8bn To Buy Atos Cyber Security Unit

Airbus is in talks to acquire the cyber security and data division of a leading French IT company. Atos has announced that it had opened a due diligence process with the aerospace and defence company that would place an enterprise value of as much €1.8bn on Atos’s big data and cyber security unit.

Atos is a business of national strategic importance in France and holds key public sector contracts in other EU member states. It is also  major IT supplier to the British government, as well as other clients in the private and public sectors, but has seen its revenue plummet in recent years, with businesses choosing other providers as many of them have moved their IT operations to the cloud.

Airbus is one of two bidders said by Atos to have expressed an interest, with the other thought to be rival French defence giant Thales, which is already in the cybersecurity business following the €4.8 billion acquition of Gemalto in 2019.  Atos’s negotiations to sell BDS mark a change in strategic direction as it struggles to deal with over €2.25bn in debt.

While Airbus has made no secret of its ambitions to expand its cyber activities ans the  talks with Atos and about BDS are not exclusive and Thales, which has jet-fighter maker Dassault Aviation as a major shareholder, has been interested in BDS in the past as part of its effort to expand its existing  cyber security business.
