The Most Important Technology Advance In Decades
The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the most important technological advance in decades, according to Microsoft's co-founder Bill Gates. In a recent blog Gates says AI is as fundamental as the creation of the microprocessor, the personal computer, the Internet, and the mobile phone.
"It will change the way people work, learn, travel, get health care, and communicate with each other," Gates said.
“In my lifetime, I’ve seen two demonstrations of technology that struck me as revolutionary... The first time was in 1980, when I was introduced to a graphical user interface, the forerunner of every modern operating system, including Windows... The second big surprise came just last year. I’d been meeting with the team from OpenAI since 2016 and was impressed by their steady progress."
Gates was so intrigued by their work that he gave them a challenge - to train an artificial intelligence to pass an Advanced Placement biology exam and to render it capable of answering questions that it hasn’t been specifically trained for. Today, he is writing about the technology used by tools such as chatbot ChatGPT, although ChatGPT is not the only AI-powered chatbot available, with Google hurriedly introducing its own product, named Bard.
Developed by OpenAI, ChatGPT is an AI chatbot which is programmed to answer questions online using natural, human-like language.
In January 2023 OpenAI received a multibillion dollar investment from Microsoft - where Mr Gates is an advisor.
Recognition Of AI Risks
In a development related the fast-growing use AI - driven applications, Gates, along with other leading figures from the technology sector including Elon Musk, have called on governments to work with industry to "limit the risks" of AI,but said the technology could be used to save lives. "AI-driven improvements will be especially important for poor countries, where the vast majority of under-5 deaths happen," Gates wrote."Many people in those countries never get to see a doctor, and AIs will help the health workers they do see be more productive."
Gates urged governments to collaborate with businesses to reduce the threats posed by AI technology. By assisting health professionals in being more productive while handling repetitive duties like note-taking, paperwork, and insurance claims. Some examples of this he gave include completing repetitive tasks such as insurance claims, paperwork, and note-taking.
In order for this to happen, Gates is calling for a targeted approach to AI technology in the future. "Market forces won't naturally produce AI products and service that help the poorest," he said. "The opposite is more likely. With reliable funding and the right policies, governments and philanthropy can ensure that AIs are used to reduce inequity."
AIs are believed to be employed as an efficient instrument against global inequality and poverty through this focused approach. "Just as the world needs its brightest people focused on its biggest problems, we will need to focus the world's best AIs on its biggest problems."
