Artificial Intelligence Presents Urgent Risks
Artificial Intelligence (AI) experts, journalists, policymakers, and the public are increasingly discussing a broad spectrum of important and urgent risks from AI.
Now, an eminent scientist is warning that AI could wipe out the human race within the next decade
Prof Geoffrey Hinton, who has been named the 'Godfather of AI', has said we need to be “very careful” and “very thoughtful” about the development of AI, which he says is a “potentially very dangerous technology”.
Professor Hinton, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2024, said the pace of change in the area of AI is “much faster” than he expected and there has not been enough time to complete the research he believes is required.
Prof Geoffrey Hinton has admitted his egrets about his part in creating the technology and has likened its rapid development to the industrial revolution, but that machines could take control this time.
Prof Hinton has previously predicted there was a 10 per cent chance AI could lead to the downfall of humans within three decades, but now says it has become much more likely.
In the 1980s, Prof Hinton invented a method that can autonomously find properties in data and identify specific elements in pictures, which was foundational to modern AI. In 2023, Hinton also made headlines after resigning from his job at Google in order to speak more openly about the risks posed by unconstrained AI development, citing concerns that “bad actors” would use the technology to harm others.
A key concern of AI safety campaigners is that the creation of Artificial General Intelligence, or systems that are smarter than humans, could lead to the technology posing an existential threat by evading human control, particularly now that the technology had developed much faster than expected.
